The Salton Sea was to be the next French Riviera during its heydey. There were promises and dreams that perched on the edge of fulfillment, waiting to be consummated and they are still waiting. Meanwhile, pockets of communities still eke out a living around the sea - hoping for the return of the glory days. It is important to note that these are indeed communities, despite the hardships the members face and the overwhelming sense of abandonment.

The landscape, on the other hand, is changing and experiencing its own restoration. What were once settlements scant decades have flooded, dried up and now teem with wildlife and vegetation. The Salton Sea is now a vital habitat for a vast diversity of avian species.

In order to view these photos the way they are meant to be viewed, focus past the image until the two start to converge. Keep on doing so until they become one, making sure to keep your horizon level so they will merge properly. The result is a scene in three dimensions of surprising depth and clarity.
